Maria Lopez Interiors LLC
Maria Lopez, Principal
CHID, NCIDQ#8656, MD CID #459, SAGE, CASHE

Maria provides Principal level Interior Design, Interior Architecture and related services with particular expertise in Senior Living. She has worked extensively in broad project types and scopes with experience ranging from corporate projects to development of small houses for dementia care startups. Maria is recognized for creative solutions that support care models, and caregiver functionality while meeting financial goals and maintaining the resident as the focus of every project. Her emphasis in residential healthcare design is to provide residents with an environment that looks and feels like their own home while being functionally supportive for caregivers and families. Maria stresses that choices for these environments need to be familiar to residents and is a strong supporter of resident-centered care. Maria believes the level of care should not be evident by FF&E; the ability to provide care in residentially recognizable environments requires the support of the owner, caregivers and support staff. She reinvents existing medical models into residential environments and has developed products and finishes to support her designs. She completes large scale projects through specifications and installation of model apartments.

Maria recently served as a juror for the Environments for Aging 2015 awards recognition to be showcased in the spring 2015 EFA magazine. She is also serving on the 2015-2016 cycle for the Design for Aging jury and Post Occupancy evaluations.

Prior to returning to her own design practice, Maria was the Director of Interiors for the Senior Living Studio of CSD Architects. She led national and international Senior Living projects across the continuum of care, as well as specialized environments including dementia care and hospice. Projects completed encompassed new construction of expansive campuses and renovation of existing spaces including occupied long-term care, memory care and hospice. She participated in Project Charettes, or work groups, which brought the stakeholders together to build consensus and develop project phasing. The Charettes included master planning, as well as repositioning. Maria was the lead Interior Design professional and the stand in for the architectural project managers during all phases of the projects. She also completed construction administration services during that phase.

Maria was the Corporate Design Consultant for Caretenders Healthcorp in Louisville, Kentucky while they expanded their adult day care centers nationwide. She completed site search, prepared based concept plans, and provided oversight for construction documents, FF&E packages, and specifications. She met with local jurisdictions to resolve all code related issues and provided construction administration and installation services. She established national standards for space plans and FF&E, which were modified to reflect the region and end users. Maria worked in 16 states for Caretenders from California to Florida to New England.

Maria has a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She has focused her professional career on the interior environment passing the NCIDQ in 1990 and maintaining her Maryland CID in good standing ever since. She worked in the corporate and educational arenas before specializing in healthcare design for the past 28 years. She is also one of 50 Founders of The American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID). Maria has been on the Board of Directors for the AAHID since 2012 and is the current Board Liaison for the Test Development Committee; responsible for maintaining and updating the exam content through extensive item writing, review and editing. Her first Board appointment was the Director of Credentialing, overseeing the candidate application and online portfolio review process. Maria developed an online application template for candidates to upload their required professional experience portfolio for review. She has participated in national conferences as a representative for AAHID including delivering the exam workshop with her co-founders, Jocelyn Stroupe and Jane Rohde. Maria received awards for two community expansions, which were published in Design, an annual publication of Nursing Homes/Long Term Care Management. Her well received design of a memory care space was the focus of a Post Occupancy Evaluation at an annual Leading Age conference. Maria attends both Environments for Aging and Leading Age annually.
